Rambi Sechoaro: I want to be more than just Bonang’s sister

She is a star on the rise and a businesswoman in the making.

Former Miss South Africa 2016 contestant Rambi Sechoaro is making her mark as a brand and refuses to ride on her older sisters’ [Bonang Matheba] fame: “I want to build my own brand and I never want to get jobs because of my half sister, I do however look up to her and respect her work ethic,” said Rambi.

Before entering Miss South Africa 2016, this 22 year old was already highly active doing charity work as well as getting local and international modeling engagements through her agency, Ice Models while juggling her Accounting Science studies at Unisa.

Rambi explains how she shares a passion for the entertainment industry just like her sister. “My sister gave me a few tips on having a thick skin in order to survive in the industry, and I have learnt a lot from her success,” she said.

Rambi says, although her and Bonang do not meet often due to hectic work schedules, when they do bump into each another, it is always pleasant.

As she gracefully shies away from her sister being the topic of discussion Rambi shares how she has received so much support from her mother and aunt and how she is planning to use her new found celebrity status to inspire people.

“The Miss SA platform and new-found celebrity status gave me a space to talk about the things that I am passionate about – modeling, children and being a businesswoman,” she added.

Bonang Matheba retains Revlon deal

Brand Bonang has been unshaken by recent bad publicity, and Revlon has now confirmed that it will not be letting the fierce presenter go anytime soon

Top Billing and Metro FM presenter Bonang Matheba has once again proved that her brand is strong enough to survive any storm. Revlon has confirmed that it will not be terminating its deal with the queen of South African entertainment.

Bonang MathebaThe company told Times Live that Matheba will continue as their ambassador in SA. “We have no plans to end our relationship with Bonang,” said Revlon SA Spokesperson Michelle Stevens.

And to put the spotlight on her brand’s incredible strength, Matheba announced today via Instagram that her lingerie collection Bonang For Distraction will be launched at David Jones department stores in Australia in October.

Questions over whether Revlon would continue to use Matheba as their ambassador were raised after a love-triangle scandal saw the presenter’s name dragged through the mud. It was alleged that her affair with rapper AKA led to his break-up with DJ Zinhle, the mother of his child.

Social media users questioned Revlon’s alignment with Matheba when an advertisement for Love Is On was aired during an episode of Date My Family three weeks ago. They noted that it was awkward for the star to be talking about love in the midst of the scandal that was trending at that time.

A couple of weeks ago, The Sunday Times reported that the scandal may have damaged Matheba’s relationship with Revlon. They reported that the matter was so serious that it had to be dealt with at the company’s head office in Paris.

Matheba clinched the deal in 2013 and became the first South African personality to represent the cosmetics giant. Speaking about the deal with Times Live, at the time, Matheba said she had turned down offers from other brands in the past, but had accepted the Revlon deal as she felt it was more in sync with her brand.

“I think it hit me only about five minutes before I saw the billboard – there were tears. I’ve known for almost six months and I’ve been dying [to tell people]. I’m proud that I was chosen out of thousands of girls. I’d been approached by three brands before, but I wanted something close to what Bonang was about – women. I’m glad I waited,” she told Times Live.

Her other business interests include her lingerie range with Woolworths, ambassadorships with BIC Pens, Ciroc Vodka and Gert-Johan Coetzee, and her hair brand Diva Divine.

Bonang Matheba makes Forbes list

Bonang Matheba Forbes 2012 ListPopular radio and television personality Bonang Matheba is excited at having made it into the list of Forbes Magazine’s 13 most influential artists in Africa and has promised to work harder to make her star shine brighter.
Of the 13, DJ Sbu, Trevor Noah and Matheba are the only South Africans who made the list. Other celebrities to make the list are Serge Ibaka, a Congolese basketball player who plays in the American National Basketball Association, Julius Onah, a Nigerian filmmaker, and Ajak Deng, a model from Sudan.

“I’m so honoured to have made the Forbes list. It was amazing,” Matheba said. “I never thought I’d ever make it to a Forbes list and being the only South African female to have made the list and to be among greats like Trevor Noah and DJ Sbu is an honour.

“Making the list contributes to a great start to the new year. Who knows what else is in store for the rest of the year?”

Matheba said she thought her work ethic and consistency had helped her earn a coveted spot on the list.

“There is also the fact that I am able to bounce back from hardships and tend to kick butt, so no one can tell me anything about attitude,” she said.

Noah made waves in the Unites States last year when he made appearances on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the first South African comedian to do so.

DJ Sbu, real name Sibusiso Leope, has helped launch the music careers of artists such as Zahara and the late Brown Dash through the TS Records label.

Battle of Black Beauties – Bonang Matheba vs Nonhle Thema

Bonang Matheba FHM cover girl | YFMThe latest column by my friend, the irreverent, Khaya Dlanga, entitled “I’m Nonhle Thema, Bitch!” is bound to raise eyebrows. It prompted me to write this blog because it’s been on a my mind for a while i.e. a comparison between the who black celebs.

For a long time I’ve been connected to Nonhle Thema on Twitter, and her Facebook. We’ve never met but we’ve interacted a little bit on the social networks. Currently Nonhle has 46,445 followers on her Twitter account. On the other hand Bonang Matheba has 65,767 followers on her Twitter. Now on Facebook it looks even more dramatic because Nonhle Thema page only has 28,456 Likes, while Bonang’s page has a spectacular 202,778 LIKES.

These two are both television stars – meaning they are famous for being famous. Neither has won any beauty pageants, neither has won any acting awards. They host tv shows for God sake. Both have been featured in FHM South Africa. And it’s here where Bonang seems to have pulled ahead by getting the first cover shoot.

From everything I’ve noticed it seems Bonang has the more down to earth appeal of the masses. Nonhle’s constant rants on Twitter e.g. “I dare any broke yfm dj to step up to me…if you are broke sit down or i wll give you rent and food money….LOL.” This is a reference to Bonang who’s been a YFM DJ for a while now.

We cast our vote for Bonang for maintaining her sense of cool on all the meaningless curfullel online.
